Spring Is Coming: Is Your Plumbing Ready for It? Our Redlands Plumbers Can Help!

Any Redlands plumber knows that Spring is one of the busiest seasons, due to the heavy rains that often overwhelm plumbing which hasn’t had enough to do during the winter. Spring is when basements are most at risk of flooding, and when leaks that might not have been noticed during the winter months suddenly start becoming major issues.

While not all plumbing jobs can be avoided, there are some things you can do yourself to help prevent problems from occurring; or at least prevent minor problems from turning into big ones.

Straight from one of Redlands’ top plumbers, Steel Plumbing & Drain Experts is here with some great tips for heading off spring plumbing problems.

Top Tips for Preventing Flooding This Spring

  1. Clean your gutters and downspouts.

In case you’re worried about flooding problems, you might not think to look up, but that’s where a lot of problems can come from. When your rooftop gutters and rain spouts have gotten clogged during the fall and winter, that’s going to cause them to overflow straight onto the foundations around your house. From there, it’s far easier for the water to enter your house.

  1. Check your foundation and basement floor.

The temperature changes in the winter can easily cause small cracks to appear in your foundation, providing an easy entry point for spring rains. Check the exterior foundation and basement flooring for any cracks, no matter how small. These can be filled in with hardware store epoxy, preventing costlier repair jobs.

  1. Test your sump pump.

In the event you have a pump in your basement, now is definitely the time to test it out. Just take a bucket of water and pour it out around the pump. Check, and if anything goes wrong, you’ve got time to call in professionals before spring rains hit.

  1. Look for signs of leaks.

Here’s an easy way to know whether you have leaks in your home. Right before bed, check the reading on your water meter, then don’t use any water overnight. In the morning, if the reading has gone up, you’ve probably got leaks that need attention.
